The first woman successfully joined the Seattle Fire Department in 1977, opening the door to the fire service as a career choice in the Pacific Northwest. It was a challenging time, and the women who followed her were as tough and committed as they were resourceful and resilient. Some of them are still riding rigs and inspiring us to follow their lead.
The fire service has changed over the years, but some things have stayed the same: It still needs strong, smart, committed professionals who like to train, contribute to their team and community, and make every effort to be ready for when their community calls.
The SFD Women’s Alliance was started in June 2020. It’s an alliance of individuals united by a mission: to make the fire service a better place for women, and thereby for everyone!
